How Do Slot Machines Work? Reels, RNG and Paylines Explained

The RNG: the only part that decides anything
Every slot, mechanical-looking or fully digital, in a casino or on a watch, is driven by a random number generator. When you press spin, the RNG picks a stopping position for each reel. The animation that follows just plays out that result. There is no "hot streak" stored in the machine, no memory of your last spin, and no way to time a press: each spin is an independent random event. That independence is also most of the answer to whether slot machines are rigged.
Reels and symbols
A reel is a strip of symbols; the RNG decides where each strip stops. Classic slots use a small grid (Lucky Crown runs a 3×3 layout with cherries, bells and lucky sevens), while video slots stretch to 5×3 or more. Rarer symbols pay more; the reel strips are arranged so that high-paying symbols come up less often. Two special symbols change the rules entirely: wilds and scatters.
Paylines: where a win counts
A payline is a pattern across the grid: a row, a diagonal, a zigzag. Matching symbols on an active payline pay according to the paytable; matching symbols scattered randomly don't (unless they're scatter symbols, which pay anywhere). Payouts and the paytable
The paytable maps each symbol combination to a multiple of your bet. Small wins land often, big ones rarely; jackpots sit at the top of the curve.
